I was surprised as to how many people still have yet to find out about Creative Commons. Especially how many artists.. Creative Commons creates alternative licensing structures to the age old restrictive Copyright formula. They advocate "some rights reserved" to ensure that innovation and creativity are not stifled out of fear of litigation. These general license can be applied to music, written text, video and images. They also create applications to allow authors to tag their worked with information on who the author was and what the license is. This idea of open source creativity has created huge communities of artists working together to create art inspired by art. See CC Mixture and Magnatune.
So it was quite and honor when Deborah and I met with Laurence Lessig and Neeru Paharia yesterday on behalf of Artists for Literacy. We had a great meeting.. all that and i got a t-shirt too!
